Evolution vs Intelligent Design
The Catholic Church announced today that they reject the idea of "intelligent design." They say that the theory of evolution is perfectly compatible with the teachings in Genesis.See Evolution in the bible, says Vatican
I'd just like to share some of my thoughts concerning this matter. I believe that evolution is real. It has been shown and proven beyond any reasonable doubt that species do evolve. Genetic mutations do, in fact, occur very randomly in nature. Sometimes these mutations are advantageous to the species and the genetic mutation remains with the species and becomes a prominent dominating characteristic of the species.
However, just because of the fact that I believe in evolution it should not be implied that I think that the human race evolved from any other species. I believe that we are on an entirely different level. We were created in the image of God by Him. God did create the universe and organized it in a perfect manner. There is a Supreme Being who is in control over all of this "chaos."
So... I believe in evolution AND in intelligent design. Can't they co-exist?

I completely agree on this one. You're right evolution does take place. Genes can be mutated, sometimes to very strange result. But I also know that it doesn't take place haphazardly. Personally, I've always wondered if evolution isn't one of the many tools God uses. I don't know the process that was used (and scientist don't know the exact process of how man kind came to be, either). All I know is that the more science I learn, the more convinced I am that there is a divine power at work. (From a scientific viewpoint...anything else is just too improbable)
ReplyDeleteBut this subject relates to an opinion I have about science in general. I've taken many classes in the traditional sciences: biology, chemistry, and physics. The one thing I've always found remarkable is that the science community claims to be constantly scrutinizing the world around them, to better understand things. They come up with ideas that seem to work. Then they pawn it of as absolute truth. Case in point: over the last 100 years, there have been at least 4 different ways of representing an atom. Chemist and physicists, at the time, each knew that they were absolutely right...until the model no longer worked. The model often taught in high school and basic chemistry classes today is known to be incorrect and has been proven to inaccurately describe experimental results. But it's easier to teach. So we teach it, and pawn it off as how things really are. The current model is proposed to be not entirely correct and has yet to be explained to satisfaction. Scientist can't see it. And they can't really prove it, other than to say that it seems to work. And in the end, they ask us to take it all in on a little faith.

"Every one who is seriously involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the Universe--a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble."
