Thanks Ken for making this thread. I'm going to be adding to it all week long. And now...to the hype...
ReplyDeleteHere's the results of tonight's ESPN Question of the Night:
Which 12-seed will upset a 5-seed in the men's first round?
Votes: 79,868
Texas A&M over Syracuse: 36%
Utah St. over Washington: 22%
No team has a chance: 17%
Montana over Nevada: 16%
Kent St. over Pittsburgh: 10%
Hey. 2nd place, not bad. At least there's a lot of other people out there who have faith in us. The following states think that Utah St is most likely to beat Washington:
Utah (not surprisingly), Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Maine, New York, Delaware.
But surprisingly, a lot of other states (and the international vote) seem to have a lot of faith in our Aggies. With the exception of Texas and Ohio (which make up over 10,000 of the votes), almost all of the states seem to think that we stand as much of a chance as Texas A&M to overcome our opponents. Sure this doesn't actually mean anything. But I like to see people outside of the state believing in USU.
ESPN.com experts pick Utah State over Washington:

3 out of 7 experts pick Utah St over Washington as the most likely upset in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Those that picked the aggies were: Andy Katz, Pat Forde, and Doug Gottlieb
Washington
ReplyDeleteBest case: Confidence buoyed by last year's Sweet 16 run, the rip-and-run Huskies return to that spot by strafing Utah State and outlasting Illinois. Brandon Roy is the tournament's leading scorer after the first weekend. And with Gonzaga eliminated early, Washington is again top Dog in its state.
Worst case: For the second year in a row, Washington fails to live up to its seed, losing in the first round to tempo-setting Utah State. With its top three scorers all seniors, Huskies' nice two-year run fades away. Meanwhile, Gonzaga reaches Final Four.
Utah State
Best case: With Utah and BYU on the outside looking in, Aggies own the state -- especially after upsetting Washington and Illinois to reach the Sweet 16. Nation finally recognizes Stew Morrill as one of the better unsung coaches.
Worst case: Surprising at-large berth turns out to be undeserved charity as Washington blitzes Utah State from the outset and wins by 25.

ESPN's
ReplyDeleteUSU article of the day:
Stew brings up a good point in this article:
"What I find really ironic is we were one of the teams everybody said didn't belong, then all of a sudden, we're the upset special. How the heck does that work?"

ReplyDelete34. WASHINGTON
Can Washington win a low-scoring game that matters? It couldn't against Washington State ... twice. Utah State does it even better than WSU and upsets the Huskies, 69-64, in the annual 5-12 special.
31. UTAH STATE
For the record, even though I missed on Utah State, the Aggies (unlike Air Force) are more than deserving. They get the annual 5-12 upset (of Washington) before bowing to Illinois 71-54.
